Finding Your Style Without Losing Your Mind

Sommelier Brand shoot at Gia Cantina Ottawa

When I first started in brand photography, I had just spent years at home with the kids (with a quick return to teaching squeezed in between mat leaves).

My “style” was less about fashion and more about survival: What’s the comfiest thing I own that can also withstand snack smudges, marker streaks, and—let’s face it—my own coffee spills?

Then, I had to start dressing like a "normal" person again (at least one day a week 😅).

Suddenly, the racks were full of crop tops and wide-legged jeans, and I was standing there thinking, “I’m not cool enough for this.”

Cue the full-on identity crisis!

Honestly? I’m still not sure if my sneakers go with my dress pants.

Sound familiar? If you’ve ever felt this way—especially when prepping for a brand shoot—you’re definitely not alone.

The good news? You don’t need a brand-new wardrobe or a complete style overhaul to feel confident in front of the camera. Here’s the trick: it’s all about keeping it simple, staying true to yourself, and finding pieces that reflect your unique story.

My Top Wardrobe Tips for Brand Shoots:

1. Start with what you own:

Take a look in your closet—chances are, you already have pieces that make you feel good. Don’t feel like you need to fit some ideal Pinterest mold; when you're comfortable in what you wear, you can show up confidently as yourself. Want to experiment with a new style? Go for it, but try it out at home first to make sure it feels right.

2. Think versatility.

Choose a mix of professional and casual looks. Pick something you’d wear to meet a client, along with something more laid-back for variety. This gives you options and keeps the session dynamic.

3. Tell Your Story

Your wardrobe should reflect what you do. If you’re a baker, bring an apron. A fitness coach? Add some workout gear. These personal touches can bring your story to life in a way that feels authentic and relatable.

4. Layer Up

Layers are the ultimate cheat code for variety. Swap a blazer for a cozy cardigan or add a fun hat to change up the vibe in seconds. Layers help you create multiple looks without having to do a full outfit change.

5. The 10% Rule

Elevate your everyday look just a little—you want to feel like yourself, after all. Add a statement necklace, earrings, a textured belt, or a unique pair of shoes to tie everything together. It’s those small touches that make your outfit pop on camera.

6. Focus on Being Yourself

Feeling put-together for your shoot doesn’t have to feel like an episode of What Not to Wear. Just focus on being yourself—and your photos will thank you.

Which of these tips do you think will help you most? Let me know in the comments—I’d love to hear your thoughts!
